Social sign in: presence and positioning of the second 'Remember me'

Showing 'Remember me' next to the social sign in methods is unusual and has already been discussed here and here. Based on those discussions, it was decided to have another 'Remember me' for social sign in as an option that the user needs to tick themselves (instead of it being pre-ticked).

There was only one 'Remember me' before but it was in the 'Standard' sign in form box and it wasn't clear that it works for all sign in methods so another one was added for the social sign in methods.

There are two problems with the current solution:

  1. Duplication of 'Remember me'. It was decided to duplicate the 'Remember me' in the social sign in area for security reasons (a user might forget to sign out on a public computer if we don't sign them out at the end of session). Could we come to a user-focused answer to this question by conducting UX research? We could show different interface versions, present users with scenarios and ask about their expectations.
  2. the positioning of the second 'Remember me' because it comes after the CTA that takes users to another page for authentication and they come back signed in. Visual order: Sign in with Google > Remember me. How it needs to be used (click progression): Sign in with Remember me > Google

Presence of the second 'Remember me'

Main question to answer: do we really need it or are users already more 'catious' on computers that aren't theirs? Will they manually sign out in such scenarios?

Possible questions for UX research:

  • How do you sign in to GitLab on a public computer or a computer that isn't yours?
  • Would you sign in with any of the social methods on a public computer? (Closed ended question)
  • What do you think about the 'Remember me' next to the social sign in methods?
  • [Show a UI without the second 'Remember me'] Scenario: you're about to sign in to GitLab on a public computer. What do you do? Which sign in method do you use? What do you expect will happen when you close the browser?

We could use Usability Hub and our Research panel so it doesn't consume too much of our time.

Positioning of the second 'Remember me'

If we conduct UX research and confirm that we do need the second 'Remember me', how can we place it better so it's clear that it needs to be ticked before clicking on the chosen sign in method? Can it be done in a way so it's consistent with the other 'Remember me' on the page?
