Ability to create issues with little detail in issue board
Related to: #28431 (closed)
User interviews highlighted that the advantage of simplistic project management tools (for example, Trello) over GitLab is the ability for users to create an issue with just one click and with minimal detail.
For a couple of reasons:
-
Some issues are very small and can be quickly completed by a developer (less than a day). However, they still need to be tracked, especially if the issue relates to a ticket a customer has raised and is chargeable work. Developers just want to resolve the issue, rather than spending their time writing a detailed issue. For example, one user said that some issues simply comprised of a "one line subject".
-
Non-development tasks for non-technical users. Smaller development teams tended to use a shared issues board with non-technical colleagues, such as admin staff. In one case an issues board was used company-wide. The ability to create an issue without the added noise of fields, etc seems to be preferred by non-technical users.

Advanced project management tools (for example, JIRA) don't offer this level of simplicity, so users revert to using methods outside of a virtual Kanban board. However, this causes a greater risk of work being completed and then lost (i.e. not tracked so not chargeable).
I'm aware that we have the functionality to create a simplistic issue from GitLab's issue boards, which I think help alleviates some of this problem (although I'd like conduct usability testing to see if it's being utilised). However, it still feels like we could be doing more, @victorwu I seem to remember you were considering how users could create an issue on the fly very quickly from anywhere within GitLab - perhaps this is some evidence for that?
