Background

Which default view for GitLab help users not familiar with GitLab feel more comfortable? What view is most useful to them?

Hypotheses
  1. I expect that the Readme (which is the current default) will be preferred when people are viewing projects they are unfamiliar with.
  2. Files will be comfortable to people who are very familiar with GitHub
  3. Activity would be useful for people who are managing a team or the project.

OPEN Given this hypothesis, and with the limitations of not knowing roles of users, and not being able to build a smart experience, how would we change the design? Initial reaction - focus on numbers. See which category is largest, and set default to that.

Proposed process
  1. Clone an existing active project. Set up 3 accounts, each with a different default view set in https://gitlab.com/profile/preferences.
  2. Recruit people who don't currently use GitLab (but fit our target personas)
  3. OPEN What questions or tasks does it make sense to ask them?
