blackbox: Code cleanups for blackbox and related stats package

Given that I'll soon extend the blackbox code to also support pushes, I've started to take a look at its current implementation. I had some problems understanding relevant code paths and thus decided to start with a preliminary refactoring to make it both easier to use and easier to understand.
