Problem Description
A GitLab Dedicated customer is reporting a 1.2GB project size. After running the housekeeping tasks, the BFG repo cleaner, and clicking Recalculate repository size, the repo size on the server still does not reflect the actual value. The customer has force-pushed and has created a new project, uploading the git repo to the new project to show its true size on disk. However, the old size in the UI still remains.
I need assistance finding a method of troubleshooting why the repo size is not reflecting its true value.
Normally, on a self-managed instance or GitLab.com we would run rails console commands to try recalculating the project size. In this case, as the customer is GitLab Dedicated, our strict access controls prevent us from employing that workaround.
The housekeeping Sidekiq jobs in the logs appear to run and finish. We can see when the customer runs the prune objects job by clicking the option in the UI. However, there's still no change.
Troubleshooting Performed
- BFG repo cleaner run
- Re-ran housekeeping tasks, recalculate repo usage, and confirmed on local disk the size
- Uploaded to new project and saw the smaller project size
What specifically do you need from the Gitaly team
Any additional advice on how to proceed on troubleshooting this without accessing the GitLab Rails console is appreciated.
- What can I try next?
- What should I look for in the logs?
- Can I do this without going into the Rails console or SSH into the instance?
