Priority Items
This is an ordered list from high-to-low priority.
Discover Cells 1.0 Impact for Cloud Connector
Enabling Cells is a top company-wide priority. We are aligning to standardized deadlines per CTO guidance.
Continue to support the monetization of Code Suggestions and maturing Chat on self-managed.
Effective Feb 15th, users must be assigned an "AI add-on seat" in order to continue receiving uninterrupted access to Code Suggestions. GitLab Chat will be released in a beta state and we will work to extend it's functionality to support SM users ability to ask questions about GitLab documentation.
After Feb 15th, our team will be conducting some technical clean-up from the beta period.
In %16.10, GitLab Duo Pro Chat is moving towards general availability. The planned GA date is March 21, 2024. We are testing compatibility for self-managed releases. We estimate our level of effort on this to be "supporting AI framework".
Strengthen Cloud Connector technical foundations
We aspire to support the majority of GitLab Duo's AI features on self-managed by May 16th ( %17.0), via the GitLab Chat UX. As part of this effort, groupcloud connector will invest in tech debt, documentation, improved technical abstractions, and help address the challenges of rate limiting and telemetry. This effort will bring three key benefits:
- Improve GitLab's capacity to onboard users at scale to our AI-related features,
- Enable feature teams to self-serve their AI capabilities for self-managed customers following established technical patterns,
- Lay the foundation for future AI capabilities involving Value Stream analytics
Our investments here will help accelerate adjacent teams and unblock them in the coming months. This theme encompasses following areas of work:
-
Cloud Connector abstractions (gitlab-org&12376)
- Including the introduction of
cloud.gitlab.com
endpoint (this will used for both AI, Tanukey, and observability).
- Including the introduction of
-
Unit Primitives for Accessing Cloud Connector Features
- This work will decouple individual cloud connector features from pricing and packaging.
- Our goal is to complete this effort prior to introducing additional AI features after GitLab Duo Chat GA.
- This epic's initial focus is narrowly scoped to AI features. However, there is a long-term opportunity to extend it for Observability's quota-based usage.
-
https://gitlab.com/groups/gitlab-org/-/epics/12020+
- Usage telemetry is explicitly called out as a "fast-follow" for GitLab Duo Pro items
- For upcoming AI features, the "point of user interaction" will increasingly be in Rails.
- This workstream introduces a Snowplow connection via
cloud.gitlab.com
and puts instance administrators in the flow of control for their data - This will unblock future instrumentation for cloud connected AI features.
<strong data-sourcepos="51:6-51:71">Release Cloud Connector X Observability Integration Experiment</strong>
Observability is looking to dogfood their initial experiment with internal-only customers for Q1 via the cloud.gitlab.com
endpoint. We will need to add GOB routes to cloud.gitlab.com
.
Afterward, they will expand their audience to test with multiple SM customers. To enable the expanded testing pool, a JWT for identifying self-managed instances is required.
This appears to be a lightweight effort. We are not currently blocking the Observability team. Our timeline is to complete this work before Q2.
Upcoming Milestone Items
These items are not prioritized for %16.10. We are setting foundations in place and intend to focus on them in the coming months. This list is unordered.
-
Measuring Cloud Connector Adoption (gitlab-org&12769)
- As part of Cloud Connector's OKRs, we should be able to measure how many customers have enabled various CC features.
- Chat Post-GA AI Features
- This is currently blocked until we can align on which AI features will leverage "Chat-as-a-Platform"
- Additional AI Features on SM/Dedicated
- Rate Limits for AI Features
Resolved / De-prioritized Items
- Tanukey Support on SM. The opportunity for a self-managed native secrets manager is being re-assessed. groupcloud connector will de-prioritize support for Tanukey at this time.
- Our discovery for supporting Observability's Q1 OKR is complete. We have aligned on the work required from groupcloud connector to support Observability's Q1 OKR.
