Pipeline Authoring noteworthy accomplishments - 2023
Hi @gitlab-com/pipeline-authoring-group
Can you believe that 2023 is almost over?
When you think back on 2023, what do you look back on that you're proud of within grouppipeline authoring? We have MANY things to celebrate so please feel free to share your thoughts too!
2023 marked the third full year of grouppipeline authoring! 2023 started with the team coming together with senior engineering leadership to plan out the direction for implementing CI Catalog into GitLab.
- In May 2023, as a part of %16.0, we launched our MVC for CI Catalog.
- In December 2023, as a part of %16.7, we launched Beta for the CI Catalog.
- The team also welcomed 2 new engineers to the team.
Notable Accomplishments
- In addition to CI Catalog, this year was focused on security burndown efforts, error budget improvements, and usability improvements. All of it translated back to making it the best pipeline authoring experience for our users!
-
@furkanayhan took on moving the the
Gitlab::HTTP
library to a gem in gitlab-org/gitlab#415686 (closed). - In January, @lauraX and @avielle became co-DRIs for CI Catalog which delivered Beta in %16.7 to culminate 2023!
- @f_caplette took on driving the frontend direction for CI Catalog with the FE blueprint which we've iterated on throughout the year.
- @Kasia_Misirli has taken on many aspects since joining PA including driving our instrumentation for CI Catalog.
- @lma-git took on so many efforts including the performance related work for CI Catalog with our database team.
- @bsandlin provided critical support for our Pajamas migration efforts, CI Catalog in general and delivering experimental for CI Catalog in early November.
- As of today (2023-12-22), we saw 278 (wow!) issues completed by all of you in PA this year with an amazing (WOW!!) 35 in %16.7 alone.
🎉 I think we were "a little"😉 busy during that milestone!
Process improvements
- From feedback from our team survey, we have implemented into our PA template as section for confirming purpose and the user reception.
- Starting in 2024 on a quarterly basis, the team will get together to review our backlog and clean up duplicates or remove issues no longer needed to make us more efficient when reviewing work to prioritize next.
- We have also seen a continued increase in CI Catalog usage which can be found here.

New additions and promotion
As we welcomed Kasia and Rajendra to the team, we also celebrated Laura's promotion to Senior Backend Engineer and Fred's promotion to Staff Frontend Engineer and we saw several of you become Rails and CI templates maintainers this year too!
For me, with having worked at GitLab now for several years, it has been awesome to see the growth of all of you in your careers and for us to be able to deliver awesome features to our users. Thank you for all of your efforts this year as I know, at times, it hasn't been as easy. What has gotten us through this together has been our collaboration, supporting each other with whatever we have needed and being so kind.
As we go to 2024, I just wanted to pause to say thank you to everyone for your hard work this year and enjoy the holiday season and new year with your family and friends. Celebrate all of your accomplishments!
