Remote only promotion
We should promote having remote only organizations.
Remote only organizations:
- Give employees more flexibility
- Less commuting
- More easily bring higher paying jobs to deserving regions
- Equal level with outside world
The effect is:
- Reduce their environmental impact by reducing commuting
- Reduce the communting stress of their team members http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/commuting-takes-its-toll/
- Reduce the interruption stress of their team members https://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2014/12/30/google-got-it-wrong-the-open-office-trend-is-destroying-the-workplace/
- Are cost efficient for the employer (no office, people closer to customers, hiring people in deserving regions)
- Reduce poverty by paying out more in deserving regions
- All employees are more flexible with their time, visiting the gym and supermarket during slow hours, accepting packages and repair people
- Employees can visit family for longer, work from parents
- Employees without kids are able travel the world and work from anywhere
- Employees with kids are free to pick them up from school, take care of them when they are sick, etc.
We can think about:
- A microsite based on this repo remoteonly.org
- Updated manifesto https://about.gitlab.com/2015/04/08/the-remote-manifesto/
- PR push
- Work with weworkremotely
- Open a Forum
- Suggest the best tips/tools out there to help promote remote-only work
- Attempt to quantify the energy/greenhouse gas emissions from reducing commutes by X miles * N employees
We have to be careful about the applicability. Gitlab Inc. works remote only, GitLab is mainly used by co-located businesses. Gitlab can help with working remote but it still is a big benefit if everyone is co-located.
