Outline how to keep timezone current for On-Call scheduling

Why is this change being made?

GitLab is a fully remote company and it is not unusual to have people working in different timezones for extended periods of time. Our CEO has even mentioned that he would like to try working as a "digital nomad"

One issue I encounter frequently working between UTC -7 and UTC +7 is that I am always scheduled for on-call as if I am at utc-7

I update my timezone on:

  • google calendar
  • GitLab profile
  • Slack

I assume the on-call spreadsheet must be pulling timezones from workday, however this is an assumption as I cannot find it described in the hand book
