Trainee Frontend Maintainer: Enrique Alcántara

Hi! Welcome to Enrique‘s trainee maintainer issue 😸 I (Enrique) will guide you through examples of Merge Requests that I regard as significant proof of my capability to fulfill a Frontend maintainer role in GitLab. I also share some of my recent work that demonstrates how I break down and plan feature development on my own stage.

Recent Development Work

I led the frontend development of the MVP for the new Static Site Editor product on %12.10. These are artifacts that demonstrate how I broke down and planned the work I delivered for this milestone:

Architecture review

• I sketched the frontend architecture and submitted it for the team’s review. - I requested the review from several frontend maintainers and created follow-up issues for feedback that could significantly increase the scope of the milestone:
  • Adopt GraphQL on Static Site Editor
  • Adopt VueRouter on Static Site Editor

Delivering features iteratively

I completed my deliverables by breaking them down into smaller yet meaningful units:

• Load source file data in Static Site Editor
  • Create initial Vue app skeleton
  • Show source file data in the textarea
  • Show skeleton loading state
  • [Create service that fetches source file from GitLab API](gitlab-org/gitlab!28598 (merged)
• Load the source file data
  • Save changes in Static Site Editor
  • Allow to edit content and identify when content changes
  • Submit changes and indicate changes are being saved
  • Implement service that saves changes using GitLab Rest API
  • Fix detecting changes bug
  • Allow to retry submitting changes from an error message

When you're ready to make it official

When reviews have accumulated, and recent reviews consistently fulfill maintainer responsibilities, any maintainer can take the next step. The trainee should also feel free to discuss their progress with their manager or any maintainer at any time.

1. Create a merge request for team page proposing yourself as a maintainer.
2. Create a merge request for CODEOWNERS, adding yourself accordingly, and ask a maintainer to review it.
3. Keep reviewing, start merging 🤘
