SSOT for key areas/concepts in the handbook
Problem
While I was updating the UX portion of the handbook, I chose to duplicate some information found in other sections of the handbook rather than simply link to it. I did this after speaking with several people who described frustration and confusion within finding information relevant to them. The most common complaint is that each time they follow a link, they become detached from the original content they were reading. This happens over and over, creating what I describe as a "Rabbit Hole" effect.
@pedroms rightfully pointed out that this is not in line with our handbook guidelines.
- If you copy content please remove it at the origin place and replace it with a link to the new content. Think about the information architecture so that you Don't Repeat Yourself. Duplicate content leads to updating it in the wrong place, keep it DRY.
This is a valid point. Duplicated and misplaced or out of date content is just as bad as the original problem.
Proposed solution
We should have a SSOT for content that can be displayed across different areas of the handbook. This could be done as a partial, import, possibly a snippet. This would allow us to duplicate content when it is necessary in order to keep user on the page and focused on the topic at hand, yet keep a SSOT.
