Make GitLab Ultimate free for education
Considering:
- We make very little money from education currently and the pipeline looks small.
- We are popular in education but GitHub https://education.github.com/ and Atlassian have programs https://confluence.atlassian.com/purchasing/what-are-the-conditions-for-an-atlassian-academic-license-321848696.html
- We won't have more than 1 person for the foreseeable future working on increasing students, so it has to be self-serve
- We want all students to use GitLab so they push for its usage when they graduate, we can use more awareness.
- We want students to use all of functionality of GitLab so they are familiar with it, contribute to it, and will push their future employers to upgrade GitLab.
- Not charging for students https://about.gitlab.com/2014/05/19/students-now-free/ doesn't work since we can't count them
- Our competition is charging about $20k for a site license
The proposal is:
- GitLab Ultimate is free for universities but it comes without support
- If you want support you can buy Ultimate with a 99.5% discount, at
$4.99$4.95 per user (you pay both for staff and students). - Existing customers get Ultimate Edition with free support for the life of the contract (default), can ask for a prorated discount (have to calculate the reduction in price per seat versus the addition of students), or opt out of support and get their money back.
