Q4-FY23 TeamOps Trainer: Level 1 Pilot — Application and Progress Tracker
💡 Context, Purpose, and OKR (Shared Reality)
TeamOps is how GitLab works. It is an operations model that helps teams maximize productivity, flexibility, and autonomy by managing decisions, information, and tasks more efficiently.
In Q4-FY23, GitLab's Strategy and Operations: Workplace team will pilot a "Train the Trainer" program to achieve our KR below. This is an intensive learning experience designed to supplement the introductory lessons contained in the TeamOps course in LevelUp.
Requirements for TeamOps Trainer: Level 1
-
Complete the TeamOps practitioner course
-
Be able to answer questions (interview by existing trainer in pilot sync workshop)
-
Enthusiastic presentation of about 3-5 minutes on advantages of TeamOps on YouTube (GitLab Unfiltered)
-
Contribute proposals to the materials (1+ MRs) on iterating TeamOps content to be market-ready (e.g. more applicable to your specific team or function)
-
Create one blog post (or similar marketing content), and publish on GitLab, LinkedIn, Medium, Twitter thread, etc. This group will serve as testers for a synchronous facilitation workshop that we intend to conduct with external parties (e.g. companies other than just GitLab) in FY24. The feedback and MRs gathered in these pilot workshops will refine them and get them closer to being ready for implementation in the wider community.

🤝 Program Components and Participation Expectations (Everyone Contributes)
The TeamOps Trainer Program consists of both synchronous and asynchronous learning activities. The asynchronous sections will include the independent completion of learning activities and assignments, and the synchronous portion will be a 3-hour live workshop, divided into 2 90-minute sessions, with an hour break in between. A summary of each phase is listed below, with links to more details in relevant sections of the program outline:
-
Phase 1: Pre-Workshop Assignments (Total estimated time: 4 hours)
- Review TeamOps course and content
- Confirm your workshop
- Watch TeamOps educational videos A & B
- Write 2 Questions for group discussion
- Brainstorm your micro-topic
- Practice using Mural (optional)
-
Phase 2: Workshop (Total estimated time: 3 hours)
- See date/time options below
-
Phase 3: Post-Workshop Assignments (Total estimated time: 3 hours)
- Confirm your micro-topic
- Record a short video about your micro-topic
- Create 1 piece of educational content about your micro-topic
- Write 1 or more merge requests for TeamOps content
- Submit program feedback
📆 Program Timeline (Decision Velocity)
Due to the high engagement level in this course, it is recommended that all learners block at least 10 hours of time over the course of 1-2 weeks to participate. Learner participation is self-paced and self-scheduled, with the exception of the following deadlines:
- Participation in a half-day virtual, synchronous workshop
- Submission of all assignments within 1 week after the completion of your workshop. Reminders will be shared with all participants 24 hours prior to the deadline.
As listed above, the synchronous portion of this program will be a 3 hour workshop, divided into 2 90-minute sessions, with an hour break in between. In FY23-Q4, the workshops will be hosted on the following dates:
- (CLOSED) Group 1: Thursday, 2022-12-15 (5:00 pm - 9:00 pm UTC / 9:00 am - 1:00 pm PST)
- (CLOSED) Group 2: Thursday, 2023-01-12 (5:00 pm - 9:00 pm UTC / 9:00 am - 1:00 pm PST)
- Group 3: Thursday, 2023-01-12 (2023-01-13 at 12:00 am - 4:00 am UTC / 2023-01-12 at 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm PST)
- Group 4: Thursday, 2023-01-19 (12:00 pm - 4:00 pm UTC / 4:00 am - 8:00 am PST)
- Group 5: Thursday, 2023-01-19 (5:00 pm - 9:00 pm UTC / 9:00 am - 1:00 pm PST)
✅ Program Completion and Fulfillment Criteria (Measurement Clarity)
When all participation expectations have been completed (as outlined above), participants will submit assignments, give or deny permission for reuse of created materials, and provide program feedback in this feedback issue.
