OpenWrt/LEDE provides a recent example of a project that hard forked (LEDE from OpenWrt) and then merged back under the name of the earlier project (OpenWrt). (This is reminiscent of the much older gcc/egcs fork and merge). See also a later issue for suggesting addition of their trademark policy).
