[Outreachy 2024] [Pre-Requisite] [Step 1] Set up your Fedora Account System (FAS) account
Summary
Complete your profile in the Fedora Account System. Upload a screenshot of your profile to this issue to verify completion.
Background
You should already have seen #140 (closed) to learn more about Fedora and our community. This issue is considered a pre-requisite to be considered eligible for the Fedora Community Architect Outreachy internship. Non-completion of this issue means an applicant will not be considered for the Outreachy internship.
The next step in your Fedora journey is to have a completed FAS profile. The data in your FAS profile is used across various Fedora apps and websites. It allows for more personalization with our contributor tools and platforms, like our Matrix chat bots and git forges. Therefore, it is important that your profile is up-to-date so that our contributor tools and chat bots "recognize" you, and so that fellow Fedora contributors can see helpful info about you, like your time zone (and when you might be awake or sleeping).
Additionally, we also have a Fedora Project Contributor Agreement which all contributors must sign before they can officially contribute to Fedora. When you sign this agreement, you are agreeing that your contributions made to Fedora may always be used under open source licenses. (This is different from a Contributor License Agreement, or CLA, which actually forfeits your ownership over your work created for a given project.)
Details
A completed profile consists of these items in your profile:
- Signed the FPCA (from the Agreements tab when editing your profile)
- Profile picture (can be anything, up to you)
- First & last names
- Pronouns
- Time zone
- Website or Blog URL (if applicable)
- Chat Nicknames (choose Matrix, enter your exact username as described)
- GitHub Username (if applicable)
- GitLab Username
Once you have followed these steps, take a screenshot of your FAS profile and upload it to this issue, like mine below. Once a mentor verifies your profile, you will be assigned to this issue, which marks you as having completed this task.
How to set an avatar on Libravatar
Trying to set up Libravatar with your Fedora account? There is a not-obvious way of how to do it, this will teach you how to do it!
To set an avatar for your Fedora account, you need to log into the Libravatar account using the Fedora Account System account. To do that, you need to use a protocol called OpenID. Click here to open the OpenID login page.
In the field on this form, you need to type in this format: your-fas-username.id.fedoraproject.org
. Just change your-fas-username
to your username. For example, I would type in jflory7.id.fedoraproject.org
here. Once you do that and click "Login", you will be redirected to the Fedora Account System login page. Log in using your account details, and then you will be logged in. You can also add additional emails to your OpenID account as well.
If you have already set up a new Libravatar account using your email, you can add the OpenID option to your existing account using the same instructions while logged in. Adding OpenID will make sure that the profile image is used consistently across Fedora websites and apps that support Libravatar.
Outcome
Your FAS profile is complete, and leaves you ready to be an effective collaborator in Fedora.
