Crosswords should not be built with gradle
Users have been reporting problems with recent Crosswords releases from f-droid (I'm the upstream author.) It looks from the metadata as if you guys switched to building with gradle, something I made possible for debugging but that hasn't been tested for release builds. Turns out it doesn't work. Please revert to using ant. I've pushed a new "release" to Sourceforge that breaks gradle release builds to make this clear.

I added just enough Android Studio support to be able to do source-level debugging, but there's still a lot of stuff required for a release build that I haven't configured gradle to do. My bad for committing the gradle files without somehow communicating that they couldn't yet be used for release builds. But that's the case now and will be for a while.

I get that part. What I meant is what we should run besides
ant release. Before, we ran these scripts too:../scripts/gen_gcmid.sh xw4 > src/org/eehouse/android/xw4/GCMConsts.java ../scripts/genvers.sh xw4 XWords4 true trueThere are no official build instructions anywhere, so I don't even know if we should be running these at all.
Whatever you were doing before should still work. It's probably just a matter of reverting changes to the metadata file.
Personally, I do releases by running ../scripts/arelease-clone.sh --tag tag from the android/XWords4 directory. But IIRC there's more that's required in your environment, e.g. removing the Crittercism .jar so it doesn't get flagged as proprietary. None of this has changed in years, though, so as I said what you were doing before should work.
Point me at an example you like and I'll take a shot at release/build instructions. It was definitely dumb of me to check in an almost-working build.gradle file and not expect somebody to try to do a release with it.
