Update variable naming to be more consistent.

This change eliminates some dead code, renames variables to have a consistent(ish) naming scheme within the scripts themselves and does some slight changes to the documentation and some functions.

This is a bit of a prelude as I have a plan later to completely revamp everything. Including renaming a bunch of variables in the configs to ensure that we have finally have a consistent naming scheme and to completely revamp the main documentation.

Thoughts are appreciated and more work on this matter is coming soon.
