Microblogging: select and integrate with federated free software platform
In #1 we're looking at posting to social networks.
Microblogging is a common social media use case, with Twitter being the corporate behemoth.
The alternative to a centralized solution is federation, in which multiple instances can share data with each other.
There are (at least two) free software options for federated microblogging.
Both implement the OStatus standard.
For a semi-technical backgrounder, see A Brief History of the GNU Social Fediverse and ‘The Federation’.
Given the common aims of these platforms and Drutopia, it seems worth evaluating if and how they might fit with our work.
Existing integrations
The sandbox Gnusocial module is:
A module to integrate gnusocial conversations as a content comments.
See also this issue on the Linkback module: Integrate linkback with GNU Social, ActivityPub, Mastodon.
The Mastodon module
provides API integration with Mastodon. It intends to provide the same services as the Twitter module.
The Mastodon module is being developed alongside a generic PHP integration library, mastodon-api-php and appears to be more general purpose than the Gnusocial module, which focuses on the use case of integrating as content.
