Improving the way Metadata Manager handles large quantities of articles submitted together
During the last week support has seen an increased number of Metadata Manager users attempting to register large quantities of articles in one submission. We had one member attempting to register 360 articles in one deposit. I've noticed through my testing that any deposit of about 20 articles generates either a 500 Internal Error or a TypeError.
Then, if you received a TypeError, Metadata Manager will allow you to submit again, but the second attempt will generate a SyntaxError. This will result in the articles being accepted, but it won't empty the deposit cart, so it leads to a lot of confusion for members.
Support has been instructing members to submit articles in chunks of 20 or fewer to avoid these problems, but there is no proactive warning in Metadata Manager to inform members of this limitation.
I see this being solved in one of two ways:
-
shorter-term (less favorable): proactively warn members within the tool itself that 20 articles is the limit for one submission; restrict submissions to a maximum of 20 articles
-
longer-term (more favorable): overhaul the tool to handle large quantities of submissions
