all/common/ark: minor cleanups and fix ups

The first patch is a fixup from the "move legacy x86 bits to x86" MR as that was from 5.10 so a minor tweak for changes since.

The rest are general cleanups, bits removed in the 5.12 window and de-dupes. No functional change.
