Improve display of references

Closes issues: LA-1289 Related issues:

Does not handle point 1 if the issue very well, I'm leaving that for later. Fixed.

Ideally I wanted ellipsis of the reference title, but it turned out incredibly hard to get working in our CSS mess, so I left that for later as well. Fixed.
