Naming is hard: Aegir5 1.0 vs. Aegir 5.0 vs. ???
On one hand, the Aegir project has a long and glorious history, and the goals of the project overall haven't changed fundamentally. We seek to ease the lives of developers and operators in hosting (especially) many web applications, encoding opinionated secure best practices as defaults.
On the other hand, Aegir5 is a ground-up rewrite of the project, and a fundamentally new architecture. It's modern, more secure, and agnostic to the kind of application you're running. In that sense, it's distinct from Aegir3, which suffered from a variety of design flaws, and in particular it was Drupal-specific.
That being said, the intention is to have Aegir 5 be a viable replacement for Aegir 3 users who are finding their support runway (contingent on Drupal 7) quickly going over a cliff.
So the question is: what do we call this thing? Is it Aegir5
, distinct from Aegir3
, and the first full release is 1.0? Or is it Aegir
, and the next full release is 5.0, and following SemVer until eventually we have 6.0, 7.0, etc. versions? Alternately, perhaps a completely new name is appropriate. Suggestions welcome :)
