Water RTT LOD bias (use low-quality LOD for water reflections)
One of the disadvantages of having water shader reflections on when there's a high view distance is that water reflections will be rendered for the whole view distance, which is no secret that that will decrease performance greatly depending on how high the view distance is and how much is being rendered.
One of the popular proposed solutions is to use lower quality LOD for the distant water reflections.
Other alternative solutions that might be worth discussing would be:

Another solution (which is the least preferred one) is to show water reflections only for active grid.
