the problem i was having was i was typing a quote mark in front of the form, but i don't need to do that. `read` just reads the form. `read` does not try to `evaluate` it at all. so it does not need to be quoted to avoid problems with symbol lookup. `read` does not try to do symbol lookup. that's `evaluate`s job.
