Show a message box in the main menu instead of the floating yellow box of annoyance

Updating is important, but that is no excuse to enable this view obscuring yellow box during gameplay. What may be best is a menu like the first run dialogue that shows up each game launch, notifying the player about the new update and requiring them to press OK to dismiss it.
