HEIC decode fails at runtime, but the README lists it as supported

Context: Orivu (https://gitlab.com/rogerhoward/orivu), a panoramic stitching service, plans to run this package in a browser Web Worker as the local equivalent of its server pipeline. The worker runs the same steps over OPFS files via @wasmedia/wopfs. Local output has to match the server's native tools, so the server's exact usage is the bar.

Version reviewed: wvips 0.1.0 (origin/main, 2026-10-05)

Problem

native/scripts/deps/libheif.sh builds with -DWITH_LIBDE265=OFF, and its own comment says "HEIC decode without libde265 will fail at runtime". The README still lists "HEIC (decode)". iPhone uploads are HEIC, so Orivu needs to decode them.

What Orivu needs

Either:

  • build libde265 (decide on the HEVC patent question and document the decision); or
  • correct the README to say HEIC is unsupported.

If it ships, add a HEIC decode test.

Done when

The README matches the behaviour, and if HEIC is supported a test proves it.
