## Design philosophy
VOADI follows a new kind of design philosophy I like to call **the polished turd.**
It introduces no innovation to the game design world, doesn't even have a concise story, and the things it mimics from past games will just make you want to play those past games.
To counteract this, a lot of effort is being put into the game's music, text, art, instruction manual, website, and physical release.
VOADI has the benefit of being a niche creation whose existence is a joke unto itself.
So, a decent portion of the audience will be satisfied even if the game isn't technically awesome.
I'm having a blast creating this game and I have no regrets.
VOADI is my first game, and it's going to be a stepping stone towards something better.
All my games will be forever FOSS, so if you support me now you can continue to enjoy my future works.

# Story
This section is **under construction** and describes the basic plot and areas of the game.
## Prologue
Short version: Marvin convinces Rachel to go on a romantic outing with him to a desert island.
She reluctantly agrees.
Mere days in, Marvin dies, and Rachel must find her way back home while also searching for meaning in her own life.
Unfortunately, their boat is broken, so she will have to use the island as a resource to help her reassemble it.
Also, she's vegan, and won't harm any animals.
This is good, because the island is brimming with animals that can help her.
This story is based in part on [*The Real Castaway*](https://hooktube.com/watch?v=-qSXyz3he3M), the true story of a couple surviving for 9 months on a desert island.
Rachel stays strictly vegan the entire time, surviving off coconuts.
## 1. The beach
**Theme**: Pollution, litter, environment
The beach is the area that Rachel first encounters, as it's the area her boat first lands.
She has built a small hut to sleep in.
Marvin is buried here, and there's a large neighborhood of seagulls nearby.
Unfortunately, the seagulls have a dilemma: their beloved beach is covered in human trash and waste.
They are covered in oil and caught in plastic drink holders.
There's a bar where the seagulls drink and lament their woes.
They don't know how to fix the problem, but would give nothing more than for the beach to return to its former state, as it was years ago.
**Sequence**:
1. Talk to the seagull, learn how to leave the island.
2. Find the stick. Cross the bridge to the East side of the beach.
3. Talk to the bartender to get the whiskey.
4. Go north of the bar across Hermit Path, find Claudia and give her the whiskey.
5. Return to the beach and visit the Plant Shop.
6. Complete Dungeon 1: Plant Shop Storeroom to receive the seed.
7. Plant the seed in Claudia's cave, get rewarded with the vacuum.
8. Use the vacuum to clear the path to the woods.
**Characters**:
* Seagulls - these seagulls are pretty upset that they're covered in trash. They're politically neutral and mostly concerned with their own lives.
* Claudia - genius hermit excommunicated from society. She remains friendly but is skeptical to help you.
* Calton Weaver - the bartender friend of Claudia. He's polite, proper, and helpful. He just wants everyone to be happy.

## 2. The woods
**Theme**: Predator/prey
The woods are at the heart of the island and contain many ferocious beasts and their defenseless prey.
Be that as it may, in 2018 these "beasts" have evolved to regret their position in the food chain.
These self-loating lions, tigers, and bears face carnivore-guilt but cannot stop killing because they are obligate carnivores who require animal-protein to survive.
Meanwhile, sheep, squirrels, and birds quibble over whether their wolf companion who self-identifies as a sheep should be allowed in prey-only spaces.
They are so distracted by this argument that the killing goes on uninhibited all around them.
No one is devising a solution.
Rachel introduces cultured meat into the mix.
It solves the problem and she is rewarded.
Still, the prey animals bicker on about whether eating a food product in their likeness reinforces The Carniarchy.
**Sequence**:
1. Talk to the animals to learn of the conflict.
2. Enter the swamp and find the witch. She asks you to find a rafflesia bud and gives you a key.
3. Follow the swamp to the end and use the key to open an underground path.
4. Complete the mini-dungeon to drain the swamp and access the rafflesia bud.
5. The witch gives you cultured meat in exchange for the bud.
6. Give the cultured meat to the chicken in the peace circle to receive the flippers.

## 3. The castle
**Theme:** Power, culture
A villanous primate, David Graybeard, has set out to conquer the island.
He has used his supreme intelligence to coerce the beavers into building him a castle, and he commands an army of chimps after climbing to the top of their social hierarchy.
His plan is to take ownership of the island's land and force the animals into a new mode of production which suits his needs, or else face consequences.
The beavers can fix your boat, but a local repair shop is part of the resistance against David Graybeard and cannot help you until he is defeated.
You will need to trek into Graybeard's castle and overcome many obstacles before finally defeating Graybeard himself and restoring hope to the land.
**Proposed solution**: Graybeard's castle is a large dungeon with lots of puzzles.
Maybe Graybeard even taunts you along the way.
In the final room, maybe you can just reason with him. Or maybe you have to choose between "violent" and "nonviolent" action.
Or maybe the beavers all storm in and announce that they're unionizing, I don't know.

## Finale
The beavers fix your ship, and you get a very satisfying moment where everyone you helped waves you off as you sail away.
Roll credits. |
