min/max of (unsigned) byte field data
At some time an exceptional handling of byte data arrays has been introduced: while for all other data array types min and max field are real min/max unless otherwise explicitly set, byte arrays default to 0-255 as motivated by image data. In fact, byte data arrays are often used for other purposes, mainly to store some classification type information (LAS and Gadget data, connected components, segmentation, region components etc.) In the majority of the cases nothing is visible by default (data are usually in the 0-10 range) and the default 255 is propagated through a range of modules. In the last times I have introduced several name string analysis tricks that succesfully convert e.g. scalars x-force, y-force and z-force to a vector force ans set default presentation to RGB when image_red, image_green and image_blue or similar triples are discovered. Ny proposal: retain 0-255 limits for red/green/blue/grey data and set to true-min:true_max otherwise.
