Upstreaming more obvious patches from gst-droid branch

As part of making camera-app works with GStreamer/gst-droid backend, I've made a number of patches that deemed correct across backends. Thus, I submit this MR to reduce diff between gst-droid branch and master and to reduce the size of gst-droid MR in the future.
