Suggestion: optional setting to be automatically notified about substantial changes on content
1. The Current Situation
When I say "comment", you can also read "thread" or "topic", making the logical adjustments.
Like in most forums, Tildes allow the users to alter their comments later on. This is great for quick fixes, but, when substantial corrections are required, there are two options:
-
Explaining it in Reddit fashion with something like "Edit: add new item to the list", "Edit: fix double negative that made the logic unsound", or "Edit: grammar" (in my opinion the later is unnecessary, but some people like to be thorough).
-
Making another comment.
2. The Problem
The problem with the first option is that the only new readers and the ones that revisit the comment will catch the edit.
The second kinda solves the notification issue, but only for the user you answer to. It also makes your addition less visible for new readers.
2. Proposed Solutions
2.1 Automatic Notifications
After the initial post, I propose for Tildes to automatically check for any substantial changes (the ones larger than X characters, or X percentage of the comment) and notify all sub-commenters of the alterations.
This check would only happen ten minutes after the initial post, and the five minutes after each subsequent alteration. The reason for the delay would be to make sure to check against a "stable" version of the comment1
2.2 Manually Mark as Content as Stable
This simpler: the commenter would have the ability to mark the latest state of their comment as "stable", notification every user that replied to it.
Footnotes
-
As much as I proof check my postings on Emacs, with Grammarly and the Chrome spell check, as a second language English speaker I always make a bunch of mistakes that I only catch after posting. I believe this is true for people with English as a mother tongue either. That's one of the reasons I find it would be beneficial to have a large delay for this function, in order to prevent alerting users about minor wording fixes.
