Prevent the user from replying directly to their notifications when other peer-level comments exist
Based on this brief brain storming session, the issue of replying to a notification while the user is unaware of other peer-level comments can lead to uninformed comments by the user. This problem seems to exist on Reddit and Tildes.
We discussed the addition of a counter of peer-level comments in the notification feed.
Existing: UserName | time elapsed | Link | Parent
Proposed counter: UserName | time elapsed | Link (n other replies exist) | Parent
However, based on the linked conversation, it might be best to force the ideal user flow. I propose the following solution:
Currently the bottom right button on notifications is Reply. In the case where other child comments exist, maybe we should show the counter, and also replace the “Reply” button with “Context”. Clicking Context would do the same thing as clicking Link.
In my opinion, this change is in line with the philosophy of having the comment input at the bottom of the thread. It forces the user to read the context prior to their own comment.
