Enhanced Type Hierarchy Support in QAT Object Recognition
Summary
Enable QAT to leverage Qt's inheritance hierarchy when searching for and interacting with objects, allowing developers to find objects by parent types and recognize child objects through their inherited interfaces.
Current Limitations
Problem 1:
Unable to Find Child Objects by Parent Type. When searching for objects, QAT requires exact type matching. This prevents finding objects that inherit from a known base class without knowing the specific subclass.
buttons = qat.find_all_objects({'type': 'QToolButton', container: main_window})
# This will NOT find MyButton instancesProblem 2:
Unable to Access Parent Interfaces. Once an object is found, there's no way to interact with it through its inherited interfaces without knowing its exact class name.
btn = qat.find_object({'type': 'MyCustomButton'})
# Can't recognize that the object inherits from QToolButton to use all its methods and properties in the common wayProposed Solution
- Enhanced
qat.find_all_objectswith Inheritance Support - Object Interface Access via Parent Classes
- Type Checking and Verification, example
btn = qat.find_object({'type': 'MyCustomButton'})
assert btn.is_a('QToolButton') # Returns True
assert btn.is_a('QAbstractButton') # Returns True
assert btn.is_a('QWidget') # Returns TrueExpected Benefits
This feature significantly improves QAT's usability in modern Qt applications where inheritance and factory patterns are common, reducing test fragility and maintenance overhead. Key benefits include:
- Testing Widget Factories: Handle factory-created widgets where exact types are determined at runtime
- Plugin Architecture Testing: Discover and interact with plugin components through their base interfaces
- Complex UI Frameworks: Test applications with deep inheritance hierarchies without knowing every concrete type
- Reduced Test Maintenance: Tests work with interfaces rather than concrete types, making them resilient to implementation changes
- Improved Reusability: Write generic test code that works across multiple widget types sharing common interfaces
- Simplified Verification: Easy type checking throughout the inheritance chain with
is_a()method - Better Object Discovery: Find objects by behavior (interface) rather than implementation details
