add seasonal achievements that give the player a clear direction, a clear idea for what to do next.
I really like PoE's challenges and Diablo 3's season journey. D3-style, with meta-achievements of increasing difficulty with rewards along the way, is slightly tougher to implement - but slightly more rewarding for the player - than PoE's simple list of challenges roughly (but not completely) sorted by difficulty.
Some sort of quest system could also work. Similar idea: give the player direction/goals.
