sol-browser

Project information

Sol is an open-source web browser for Windows, built by a web developer who wanted something lighter and nicer to use than what Windows offers.

It keeps tabs in a sidebar, with groups, pinned tabs and a split view. Tabs you are not using are put to sleep and then unloaded, so a long session stays light. Ads and trackers are blocked out of the box with uBlock Origin Lite, and a video keeps playing in a small floating player when you leave its tab.

For web developers, Sol includes a device simulator with real phone and tablet shapes, several screens side by side, a network inspector, and shortcuts for local development such as typing :3000 to open localhost:3000.

You can bring your bookmarks, history, passwords and extensions from Chrome, Edge or Brave, and back everything up to a single file encrypted with your own key. Sol has no account and sends no telemetry: your data stays on your computer.

Sol runs on Microsoft's WebView2, so pages render with the Chromium engine. It is written in C# with WinUI 3, and its interface in React and TypeScript. It is free, MIT licensed, and at an early stage (version 0.1).
