In our work over the years on privacy and security, we have always sought to expand the focus of our work beyond the more obvious needs of activists, journalists and human rights defenders. We understand that the worker is an everyday activist, striving, and sometimes fighting, to establish space for their personal rights to be defended. This is especially true with the modern worker facing a new wave of technology focused on maximizing efficiency, connectivity and value extraction.
Fortunately, technology can also be used to provide fair access to the history of valuable data generated by a worker throughout the day. For over five years, we have engaged in work considering the impact of smartphones as sensor platforms, and not just portable computers. The mobile device data stream can provide powerful leverage to activists of all kinds, whether it be as evidence in court, or an asset in a negotiation. Beyond that, there are many other kinds of digital outputs and networked interactions to be investigated, considered, remixed and hacked upon. We look forward to the opportunity to facilitate this process.
The project now named “Spotlight” is an app that allows its users to join and participate in studies which aim to help them work better. The studies will utilize sensors and access data on the user’s device in order to provide the study with the input it requests. The user can start and stop the studies as they wish.
The high level questions this project will address are:
- What do we need (to know) to work better?
- What did we learn from the study we participated in?
- How can I gather data necessary for me to advocate on behalf of a worker?
- How can I utilize, process and visualize the data I have gathered?
Based on the “Improving Young Workers’ Job Quality and Voice in the Digital World of Work” RFP, we have summarized the key points and activities below. Relevant specific activities from the RFP (“Written report in each region language” etc) will be converted into work tickets to track within our project management system.
