Download in Excel with layout and including attributes
Given that I'm using the .Stat DE,
In order to easily use the data outside of the Data Explorer
I want to be able to download the data as it is displayed and use it in Excel.
Scenario 1:
Given that I'm using the DE visualisation page
When a data table is being displayed
Then I can use the download menu ("Table in Excel") to initiate the download of the displayed data table in Excel (xlsx) format, including the header, footer, table layout, the observations and attributes values:
-
The download should start immediately. There is no e-mail validation or whatsoever.
-
The downloaded file format should be xlsx. The default file name is constructed in the same way as done for csv. It is shortened in the same way than csv, in case the default file name is too long.
-
All online table's layout, styles, cell and text formatting should be maintained in the download (WYSIWYG - as much as Excel allows).
-
Data: Only the filtered data contained in the online table will be downloaded. The online table limitations (maximum number of observations to be returned by the SDMX web service; maximum number of cells to be displayed) are maintained in the download. If the selection exceeds the predefined table limits, then user should be warned with a message. Note: Since this warning is already implemented for the online table, an additional warning is NOT required.
-
Attributes: Flags and footnotes are to be stored (depending on technical feasibility):
- either in Excel cell comments (see example below) or
- as internal links to a second sheet with exactly the same layout but without any values and with flags in the cells instead of values. In this case, the cells with flags in that separate sheet also link back to the related data cells in the original sheet (bi-directional linking).
For a given cell, each flag for that cell is presented in a separate line (in the comment or in the flag cell).
-
Header: The online table header's title, first sub-title and second sub-title are to be replicated in separate spreadsheet lines above the data table. The title is formatted as external hyperlink, which is defined as the online table's source link.
-
Footer: The online table footer's copyright is to be replicated in a separate spreadsheet line below the data table (including its external hyperlink). The source, source link and logo are not included below the table.
Additional DE changes required:
Change the download option texts to:
- Table in Excel
- Filtered data in tabular text (csv)
- Unfiltered data in tabular text (csv)

Example:
The resulting Excel download would look like this:
Notes:
- The styles and colours used in this mock-up are not representative. The online table's styles and colours are to be used.
- The mock-up shows the case where the attributes (flags and/or footnotes) are included as comments of the cells.
