Mastodon is not a service

In the description of Mastodon it's very important to make the point that it is not a service but an application running on a protocol that creates a network that is open for any compatible application and where anyone running a server becomes part of the network.

I strongly recommend reworking this recommendation to have The Fediverse as the main title, and introduce PixelFed and PeerTube in addition to Mastodon. This will not only make the concept of network vs. service more clear, but will also introduce other apps that could be interesting replacements to services such as Instagram.

Here's a translation of what I wrote in Arabic:

An app for sharing short-posts, which operates on the Fediverse, which is a decentralised network not owned by a company. Organisations and individuals who have the necessary technical expertise can run their own instances and become part of the public network (or not), and control the creation of accounts on their instance, as well as its policies for content and acceptable behaviour.

There are many apps that are compatible with the network, produced by independent as well as commercial projects. Different apps present different uses. Some of them focus on photography and visual content, such as PixelFed, while other on publishing videos, such as PeerTube.

Alternatively, we can keep this section on Mastodon, with a passing reference to the fediverse, while elaborating more on the Fediverse's other apps in the section on social media and blogs, mentioning that some traditional CMSs that have implemented the ActivityPub protocol, which, overall, provides an open an independent alternative to the platform silos.
