Samsung CLX-3175FW color scan "Not a JPEG file"

I am using Samsung CLX-3175FW (xerox_mfp):

> scanimage -L
device `xerox_mfp:libusb:002:010' is a Samsung Samsung CLX-3170 Series multi-function peripheral

When attempting color scan,

> sudo scanimage --mode Color --format=png > color.png

the scanning fails with the following text message:

Not a JPEG file: starts with 0xfe 0xfe

However, scanning in gray,

> sudo scanimage --mode Gray --format=png > gray.png

works fine.

My system is openSUSE Tumbleweed 20191231 and I tried both sane-backends 1.0.27 from the distribution repository and sane-backends 1.0.28 compiled from source.
