CanoScan LIDE 120 black scans - lamp remains off

I have older installation of Ubuntu 16.04 with libsane 1.0.28 where this scanner works OK.

On Ubuntu 22.04 it neither works with libsane 1.1.1 from distro nor 1.2.1ppa3-jammy0 from sane-releases ppa - I can not make it to scan anything but a black page. I found out the lamp is never on. Switching back to pc with Ubuntu 16.04 scanner works - so lamp is OK.

I've created a log with

SANE_DEBUG_GENESYS="10" scanimage > out.pnm 2>genesys.log

genesys.log in the log, it reports status

is_lamp_on: yes

but it obviously is not..
