Sync sometimes hangs

Sometimes, the sync hangs. This at least has been seen on macOS, but other systems might be affected as well.

We should improve the handling of the sync and ensure we time out if a network request does not make any progress for a specific amount of time. Ideally, that amount should be configurable (so if users have a particularly slow server, they can increase the timeout to overcome the slowness of the server).
