Ryan's README
My name's Ryan and I'm a Senior Technical Writer at GitLab. This README provides a quick overview of me and how I work.
About me
- I was born and raised in Orangeville, ON, Canada.
- I studied Computing and Information Science (aka Computer Science) at Queen's University in Kingston, ON, Canada.
- I moved to the Waterloo Region in 2007 to join BlackBerry and have stuck around ever since with roles at Dematic, Google, and a startup.
- I've held technical writer roles, technical leadership roles, and people leadership roles and loved them all, but I always come back to writing.
- I joined GitLab in June 2024.
How I work
- I'm at my best early in the day, so I like to use mornings for deep thought, tackling hard problems, or learning new things. In the afternoon is typically when I'll "get stuff done". I'm happy to meet for coffee chats any time that works though.
- I'm not usually the loudest voice in the room. I like to have time to process, but when I speak it's usually well thought out.
- I like to fix things. I typically don't complain about something until I understand why it is the way it is, and I have an idea (or a fully-documented plan with a working prototype) on how to fix it.
Personal life
- I have two awesome kids and love spending time with my family. Family movies and game nights are the best.
- I love being on the water or anywhere out in nature.
- I'm a gardener. If I get up to stretch my legs for a few minutes, I'm likely checking on my seedlings, vegetable garden, fruit trees (apples, peaches, pears, plums, cherries, and plumcots), or berry bushes, depending on the season.
