No thumbnails are generated on desktop (Ubuntu 24.04)

After recent updates on my Ubuntu Noble 24.04 files saved directly to the desktop does not show thumbnails of PDF and other image files anymore.

I have made the following observation which I can reproduce:

First I download a jpg-file (e.g. from wikipedia) to my desktop. There is no thumbnail generated and a new entry in /home/username/.cache/thumbnails/fail appears.

If I delete /home/username/.cache/thumbnails/fail and press F5 on the desktop, a new entry in /home/username/.cache/thumbnails/fail is immediately created again.

If I delete /home/username/.cache/thumbnails/fail again and open in nautilus /home/username/desktop and press F5 the thumbnail is successfully generated. When I press F5 on the dekstop the now existing thumbnail is displayed.

I got this log info when I save jpg-file on desktop:
