# Return to Skyrim - Prerequisites
## Official Content
This guide requires Skyrim as well as all of the DLC, also known as Legendary Edition. Skyrim should be installed *outside* of the normal `Program Files` and `Program Files (x86)`
directories, as Windows UAC is likely to interfere otherwise. If Steam has been installed outside of those directories, then the default Skyrim installation path should be fine.
* [Skyrim](http://store.steampowered.com/app/72850/), v1.9.32
* [Skyrim Creation Kit](http://store.steampowered.com/app/72850/)
* [High Resolution Texture Pack DLC](http://store.steampowered.com/app/202485/)
* [Dawnguard DLC](http://store.steampowered.com/app/211720/)
* [Hearthfire DLC](http://store.steampowered.com/app/220760/)
* [Dragonborn DLC](http://store.steampowered.com/app/226880/)
This guide begins with a clean vanilla install of Skyrim. After installation:
1. Run the Skyrim Launcher from Steam. Accept whichever preset is selected by the launcher.
2. Run Skyrim from the launcher. Wait until the main menu finishes loading, then exit to the desktop.
You may find it useful to create a backup archive (using 7-Zip below, or similar) of the vanilla install, in case you want
to start from scratch.
## Tools
Most tool below should be installed somewhere separate from the `Program Files`, `Program Files (x86)`, and Skyrim directories. A good choice would be in a `Tools` or `Modding`
directory on the root of the drive (preferably a data drive). From here on, this location will be referred to as your tool directory, or `Tools`.
### System Utilities
* **[OP]** [7-Zip](http://www.7-zip.org/download.html)
* This tool will allow us to open archives manually.
* Install to the default location.
### Other Utilities
These can be installed in any order.

# Return to Skyrim - Prerequisites - Additional Details
## DDSOpt
**Do not run DDSOpt through Mod Organizer!**
See the [STEP DDSOpt Guide](http://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:DDSopt) for details. The [STEP DDSOpt Quick Start](http://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:DDSopt/Skyrim) is also good.
## LOOT
If LOOT is not automatically added to the executable list in Mod Organizer, do the following:
1. Click the gear icon to open the **Modify Executables** window.
2. In the **Title** field, type *LOOT*.
3. Select the **...** button to the right of the **Binary** field and browse to the `LOOT.exe` application.
4. Click the **Add** button.
5. Click the **Close** button.
Optionally, set the value of the **Arguments** field to `--game=Skyrim` to automatically select Skyrim on startup.
## Mod Organizer
### Notes
* While the [STEP][step] guide recommends installing to the Skyrim directory, I prefer to keep that directory as clean as possible, and therefore recomment installing in `Tools/ModOrganizer`
or a similar directory.
* When running Mod Organizer for the first time, you will need to either select Skyrim from the lisat (if available) or browse to your installation. You will also be presented with
a message about a tutorial. It is recommended to view the tutorial at least once.
* While the [STEP][step] guide recommends setting up [Nexus][nexus] integration, to my knowledge the API is no longer functional, so we skip this.
* While the [STEP][step] guide recommends setting up the **Download with Manager** functionality, this guide will not be doing so, and instead will assume that mods are downloaded locally prior to installation.
### Configuration
1. Click the wrench icon to enter the settings.
2. In the **Plugins** tab, select **Basic diagnosis plugin** on the left, double click *true* next to **check_modorder** and change it to *false*.
3. In the **Plugins** tab, select **BSA Extractor** on the left, double click ** next to **enabled** and change it to *true*.
4. In the **Workarounds** tab, click the **Back-date BSAs** button. The [STEP][step] guide says that some mods may not work properly otherwise.
5. Close the settings dialog.
6. Click the profile (card) icon.
7. Verify that **Local Savegames** and **Automatic Archive Invalidation** are unchecked.
8. Click **Create** and name the new profile *Vanilla Skyrim*.
9. Verify that **Default Game Settings** is unchecked, then click **OK**. This adds a new profile to the list.
10. Select the *Default* profile and clock **Remove**. Click **Yes** when prompted.
11. Close the **Profiles** window.
12. Verify that *Vanilla Skyrim* is the currently selected profile in the **Profile** drop-down.
