Cataloguing the community-controlled open scholarly infrastructure ecosystem
@All
At the risk of merely creating a nice list for Elsevier et al. to try to buy, I want to create a list of such items (not necessarily completely comprehensive, and reflecting quality judgments). I would like to use this thread for brainstorming, and as usual with this forum an associated document should be created, which I will link to later, and perhaps can be related to the OA Directory.
Such a document would be useful for finding gaps, for encouraging collaboration, for applications to libraries and funders (e.g. SCOSS), and for publicity. The overarching goal is to strongly challenge the APC-model's dominance in the public consciousness - it is beyond ridiculous how much disinformation is out there.
Note added to clarify: I see nothing wrong with commercial providers of services useful for open science (e.g. Ubiquity Press) as long as they don't exert inappropriate control. For the purposes of this issue, let's not include them, or include them in a separate category. I realise that the borderline may be a bit fuzzy in some cases.
To start, here are some ideas for items and the basic format for entries (descriptions taken from the official websites, mostly):
- arXiv.org - open access to e-prints in the fields of physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, quantitative finance, statistics, electrical engineering and systems science, and economics.
- Free Journal Network - a curated list and membership network of (currently) 40 journals run according to the Fair Open Access Principles
- Centre Mersenne - offers tools and services for scholars and editorial teams of open access journals formatted with LaTeX
- Public Knowledge Project - a multi-university initiative developing (free) open source software and conducting research to improve the quality and reach of scholarly publishing
