Considering move to SourceHut
Hi all,
After gitlab.com's recent changes to the free tier, we have been seriously reconsidering if gitlab.com is still the best development platform for postmarketOS. It was not at all an easy question to answer for us, given how much we depend on a place for our code, issues and CI. To reflect this rather long thought process we already had, we decided to publish this short blog post with the most important thoughts we currently arrived at together with a 41 minute discussion where we go into a lot more detail.
Before commenting below, please read at least the blog post linked above with the full announcement and tentative rollout plan, and remember to use a nice tone here. Really looking forward to the feedback from all the postmarketOS contributors!
Update 2022-07-26:
- (here used to be a list of notable points yesterday, but we'd need to copy the answers to these points too... just scroll down and read them yourself.)
- published an FAQ at the end of the blog post
Update 2023-01-29:
- We had a core team meeting in January to "review the idea of moving to SourceHut based on experience with pmbootstrap.git" as it's on the roadmap.
- We concluded that we need more time for testing since we had a delay before even starting with testing pmbootstrap.git on SourceHut, as other things came up.
- And we realized it doesn't make sense to make the decision to move everything over or not before the review UI is there as we agreed earlier that this is a hard requirement for us.
- So we'll keep it in the current state until the web review UI is there, then reconsider.
