Product Catalog Management Tool
PCMT helps organizations tame their multitudes of Product definitions, Catalogs, and coding schemes that exist when a collaboration of many groups are procuring, using and sharing product data.
The Product Master Data Challenge
Health supply chains supporting low- and middle-income countries face an acute pain point maintaining product master data with many organizations and agencies that use inconsistent product identifiers and employ highly manual processes. This prevents interoperability and hinders supply planning, procurement, and end-to-end visibility. The Product Catalog Management Tool (PCMT) is an open source software global good designed to help solve these challenges with manual product master data management for the Global FP VAN to facilitate the use of consistent identifiers and enable interoperability and end-to-end data visibility. GS1 is a set of global standards for product identification including barcodes and master data standards and for manufacturers to disseminate official product data. PCMT allows organizations to publish and manage product catalogs including use of GS1 standards. See more about PCMT and GS1 below.
One of the challenges during the implementation of the NPC is the collection of the standardized product information. The majority of the product information in Ethiopia, Rwanda and Malawi were collected directly from the warehouses due to the lack of other sources to provide this data. This approach of collecting the GTIN and attributes from the warehouses is time consuming, requires a lot of effort and prone to data quality issues. Additionally, RHSC established a Global FP catalog and was subscribed to the GDSN, but was faced with several challenges to acquire the product information and for their ability to share it.
