Error saying the email is invalid

What is happening instead

1. Invalid email sytax (JustAString) shows in red under the email box, but an email with good basic syntax but isn't valid (a@1.11) is checked against the server and shows an error in the blue back end error box
2. In the Chrome extension, entering an email, such as a@1.11 checks with the back end, but does not give an error and does not advance to the next step
