Handling of community-provided translations
Background
Currently, we only have officially maintained translations. When community-provided translations are added, these might be updated in a slower pace and get out of date. Overtime, when more people contribute to a single translations, the frequency will likely increase and their quality might get nearly on par with the official ones.
Proposal
Even if community-provided translations get slightly out of date, they would still be very helpful for people who have problems understanding English. Still, it is important that users are informed about the state of the translation.
We can classify translations into three categories:
- official: this are updated by us and we ensure that all translation strings are up to date for releases
- community, well-maintained: these are updated frequently by multiple people from the community
- community, "incubating": new translations and translations which are update less frequently
Once a community translations is well maintained, I don't think there is any need to handle them differently from the official ones. For newly added or less maintained ones, we should have special handling. I think, we shouldn't select those automatically based on the browser language. Furthermore, we could show a dialog when the user selects the language informing them that it is a community translation.
