About the OpenStreetMap Foundation and the board

The OpenStreetMap Foundation is a UK-registered not-for-profit organization that supports the OpenStreetMap Project. The foundation consists of members from around the world who elect its board of seven volunteer directors (biographies - officer roles). The OpenStreetMap Foundation owns and maintains the infrastructure of the OpenStreetMap project, is financially supported by membership fees and donations, and organises the annual, international State of the Map conference. Much of the foundation’s extensive work is done in the background yet is critical to the ongoing functioning and growth of the OpenStreetMap Project.

Help the Foundation as an individual

There are various ways to help, including:

  • If you have time, you could help the volunteers of our Working Groups.
  • You can join the OpenStreetMap Foundation for free, if you are an active OpenStreetMap contributor, or for just £15 a year. You can influence the future direction of the projec by participating in OSMF discussions and by voting in the annual OSM Foundation elections.

Help OpenStreetMap as an organisation

Organisations are also welcome. Your organisation can support the OpenStreetMap project in various ways.

About OpenStreetMap

OpenStreetMap, based at www.openstreetmap.org, was founded in 2004 and is an international project to create a free map of the world. To do so, we, thousands of volunteers, collect data about roads, railways, rivers, forests, buildings and a lot more worldwide. Our map data can be downloaded for free by everyone and used for any purpose – including commercial usage. It is possible to produce your own maps which highlight certain features, to calculate routes etc. OpenStreetMap is increasingly used when one needs maps which can be very quickly, or easily, updated.
