Allow for disabling variables or path elements without deleting
In order to be able to non-destructively test changes to the environment, especially the path variables, I would like to suggest that RapidEE be changed to allow the disabling and enabling of variables and path elements without deleting them. I suggest the use of check-boxes in the UI, in front each displayed line. When starting RapidEE, the existing environment would be saved and then displayed. If the user unchecks a particular variable or variable element, that unchecked item would be removed from the environment when saved nut not lost. Upon the next start of RapidEE, the environment that was previously displayed, including checked or unchecked elements, would be displayed. It would reflect the current environment and also display any previously unchecked (disabled) elements in the list of items where they were before.
This design would allow a user to "temporarily remove" a variable or a folder from the path and be able to restore it with one click - as opposed to cutting it, pasting it into notepad (?), testing, then copying the previously cut entry and pasting it back in its original place.
I have attached a picture of an old program called "System Path Commander" which is no longer available (or supported) which used to be part of the "DonationCoder" website. It shows the basic premise of the feature I am suggesting but adding that functionality to your program, which is far more feature-rich, would increase RapidEE's ease-of-use and functionality. I hope you find this suggestion viable and that you choose to add it. Thank you
